Holy Name, St Francis de Sales students win diocesan spelling bee
ESCANABA – Holy Name Catholic School in Escanaba and Manistique’s St. Francis de Sales School students competed and won in the regional Diocesan Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee, held at Holy Name Catholic School in early December. Some of the final words were salubrious, pterodactyl, ecclesiastical, gerontology, and divestiture.
Along with students from Holy Name and St. Francis de Sales, students from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Sault Ste. Marie and Father Marquette Catholic School in Marquette competed in the annual event.
Winner in the seventh and eighth-grade division is Rushil Kasetty with runner-up, Luke LaFave. Both are seventh-grade students at Holy Name.
Fourth through sixth-grade division winner is Melanie Jones, St. Francis de Sales sixth grader, and runner up, Lisette LaFave, Holy Name fourth grader.
“The Diocesan Catholic schools would like to thank the Knights of Columbus for their efforts in putting on the Spelling Bee each year,” Diocesan Catholic Schools Marketing Coordinator Vicki LaFave said. “The Knights present a great example of our Catholic faith, and through the Spelling Bee, support our academic efforts as well.”
All the winning students are invited to compete in the Knights of Columbus Michigan State Council Spelling Bee Finals in downstate Standish on March 23.
