Hannahville splits with Grand Marais

HANNAHVILLE – Hannahville boys outscored Grand Marais in a 54-40 game hosted by the Soaring Eagles on Friday.

“We came out very strong. I was very proud of everybody,” commented Hannahville Coach Seth Miller after the victory. He noted that Grand Marais was playing without two of their starters while Hannahville was without one of their own.

Hannahville led 15-0 after the first quarter and 31-7 at halftime. The Polar Bears then gained some ground in the second half, outscoring the Soaring Eagles 33-23.

Marty Thorbahn led the Soaring Eagles (7-0) with 14 points. Seth Williams added 12. Dominic Kinlaw paced the Polar Bears with 20.

Hannahville plays the Bark River-Harris jayvees at Harris on Monday.

Results weren’t as favorable for the Hannahville girls as they dropped a 41-34 decision.

The Soaring Eagles (3-3) led 18-15 at halftime, but trailed 30-22 after the third quarter.

“The third quarter was definitely the turning point,” said Hannahville coach Tom Ohman. “They started finding the holes and got a lot of easy shots. We also went cold from the floor and the girls got frustrated. We didn’t play our zone defense very well tonight.”

Katlyn Sagataw hit 15 points and Sophie Manitowabi added 12 for Hannahville, which visits Maplewood Baptist for a pair of games next weekend.

Kellie Lundquist scored 14 for Grand Marais. Miranda Potter tallied 13 and Cindy Rauff had 10.
