Need a job?

ESCANABA – Organizers are finalizing plans for the upcoming Bay College Job Fair later this month.

The job fair will be held Jan. 31 in the Bay Rooms of Bay College’s Joseph Heirman University Center from noon to 3 p.m.

This marks the first time Bay College has had a job fair in several years, as the college previously alternated hosting the Upper Great Lakes Collegiate Job Fair with Northern Michigan University when Bay still had a career services department.

According to Annette Johnson, career and academic advisor at Bay College, 30 groups have been confirmed to participate in the fair, as of Thursday.

Some of the groups to be represented include the Jacobetti Home for Veterans, the State of Michigan, Pathways Community Mental Health, Marquette General Hospital, Menard’s, Bay Bank, Tri-County Safe Harbor, and many others, with participation reaching as far as Green Bay, Wis., Marquette and Newberry.

In preparation for the event, Johnson has been providing workshops for students that focus on resume writing and how to prepare for a job fair at both the Escanaba and Bay West campuses.

“I think it’s good to have the opportunity to have all of these businesses in one place for our students and for our community members,” said Johnson. “Having them all in one place allows them to get out there and actually network with people about job opportunities and see that there’s maybe more opportunities … than they may think are out there.”

She reminds those searching for jobs that networking is very important.

“Everybody you talk to, it may not be the perfect job that you’re looking for, but they may know someone who’s looking for someone like you. Those connections are always really, really important,” she said.

Organizers have also finalized plans for three informational breakout sessions the morning of the job fair beginning at 9 a.m. Each session lasts 50 minutes.

The first session, from 9 a.m. to 9:50 a.m., is presented by the State of Michigan Civil Service Commission and called “How to Apply for a Job with the State of Michigan and Internship Opportunities.” It will feature state representatives from the Department of Natural Resources, Information Technology, Michigan State Police, Department of Human Services, Department of Corrections, and Department of Management and Budget.

Johnson said state officials also plan to make classroom presentations to students the night before and the morning after the job fair.

A second breakout session from 9 a.m. to 9:50 a.m. focuses on services for veterans and will be presented by the State of Michigan Veterans’ Services Division.

The final session lasts from 10 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. and features presentations on retail manager trainee programs from representatives of Tradehome Shoes and Family Video.

The workshops have a limited number of space available and require pre-registration. To register, contact Johnson at (906) 217-4033 or by email at
