U.P. prison inmate dies after assault

MARENISCO – Police continue to investigate the assault of an inmate at the Ojibway Correctional Facility in Marenisco on Friday. The prisoner died Saturday as a result of injuries from the assault, according to Michigan State Police from the Wakefield Post.

Troopers were dispatched to the prison Friday for a report of an assault on an inmate, stated Det. Sgt. Russell Larson in a news release. The victim was transported to a hospital where he died the next day.

Names of the individuals involved are being withheld pending further investigation, said a trooper from the Wakefield Post this morning.

State Police are being assisted in the investigation by the Michigan Department of Corrections.
