Melvin L. ‘Mel’ Cayer

GLADSTONE – Melvin L. “Mel” Cayer, 71, of Gladstone, passed away Thursday, Jan. 9, 2013, at home following a courageous battle with cancer.

Mel was born Feb. 25, 1941, in Escanaba, the son of Arthur and Ester (Niemi) Cayer.

He was raised in Forrest Lake, Mich., prior to being united in marriage to the former Ruth Hancock on January 9, 1960.

Mel was co-owner with his wife Ruth, of the Delta Door Company in Gladstone from 1978 until the sale of the business in 1998. Mel loved airplanes, his favorite pastime was flying his plane to many different locations throughout the United States. His other hobbies included fishing, camping, hunting, cooking and gardening.

In addition to his wife of 53 years, Ruth, survivors include: son, Richard (Mary) Cayer of Gladstone; daughters, Catherine (John) Bolm of Marquette, Darlene “Rene” West of Mount Sterling, Ohio and Kimberly Greer of Green Bay, Wis.; sister, Dorothy Bender of Suamico, Wis.; seven grandchildren, Melissa, Tamara, Brian, Katlin, David, Madeline and Joseph;

four great-grandchildren, Peyton, Laci, Isabelle and Raymond; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mel’s family will receive friends on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Funeral services celebrating the life of Mel Cayer will follow at 2 p.m. with Rev. Paula Marvic of the Trinity Episcopal Church officiating. Luncheon will follow at the All Saints Church in Gladstone. Entombment will be at the Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Wells.
