Frigid temps may end soon

ESCANABA – The cold snap that has been sweeping the area and forcing many schools to close may be nearing its end. Temperatures are expected to return to the low 20s by this weekend.

Temperatures dipped to 14 below Tuesday, 12 degrees lower than this time last year, according to the Escanaba Water Plant. In response to the low temperatures and wind chills, many area schools remained closed today.

The National Weather Service’s Marquette office predicts temperatures today will reach highs between 10 and 12 with lows around zero near the shoreline. Inland temperatures will be slightly colder at 3 below zero.

Wind chills will continue to be a problem this evening, with temperatures feeling as low as 20 below overnight tonight. After tonight, neither wind chills nor ambient temperatures are expected to be below zero.

Highs Thursday are expected around 14 degrees. Friday and Saturday temperatures will rise to 20, and by Sunday the high is expected to reach 25 degrees. Weekend lows will be between 10 and 18 degrees.
