James F. ‘Topper’ Katarincic
ESCANABA – James F. “Topper” Katarincic, 78, of Escanaba, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at St. Jude’s Assisted Living Home in Escanaba.
James was born Sept. 27, 1934, in Escanaba, the son of John and Mary (Minnerick) Katarincic. James lived in Escanaba his entire life except for the time he spent serving his country in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1956. Following his discharge he worked as a porter on the boats for Inland Steel for 34 years until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church where he served as an usher and greeter and spent many hours working the church breakfasts and Harvest Dinners. He was a valued member of the 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus Council 640, spending countless hours selling raffle tickets at Elmer’s County Market and working on the MI Drive (Tootsie Rolls). James spent most of his time volunteering at the St. Vincent de Paul Society warehouse in Escanaba. James was there every day and has been acknowledged numerous times for the many hours he has given over the years. He was also an RSVP volunteer, a member of the American Legion and enjoyed crossword puzzles.
James is survived by two brothers, John Katarincic of Gladstone and Robert (Annette) Katarincic of Florida; a sister, Rosemary Katarincic of Escanaba; numerous nieces and nephews and his St. Vincent de Paul Family.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Jan. 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Skradski Family Funeral Home in Escanaba. Military honors will be presented at 4 p.m. at the funeral home by the Delta County Veterans Council. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 5 p.m. at the St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Eric Olson officiating. A luncheon will immediately follow services in the fellowship hall. James will be laid to rest in the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in the spring.
