Daniel J. Roberts

ESCANABA – Daniel J. Roberts, 54, 1600 Stephenson Ave., Escanaba, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013.

He was born on July 31, 1958, in Escanaba, son of Wilfred and Joanne (Johnson) Roberts. Dan attended Escanaba High School.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1976 until his honorably discharge in 1980.

On Nov. 26, 1982, Daniel J. Roberts married the former Susan M. Rogers at St. Joseph Church in Escanaba.

For 32 years Dan has been employed with NewPage as a coater operator. He was a steward of the USW-21.

Dan loved the Escanaba area and being active in the community. He enjoyed being involved with the Delta Men’s Pool League, board member on the Escanaba Little League, he was a member of the Elks Lodge 354, was the “unofficial mayor of Nort Town” and was founder and president of “Half Ass Construction.” During the year that his wife, Sue served as president of the Escanaba Fan Club, Dan dutifully served as her “arm candy”.

He was an avid sports fan and outdoorsman, enjoying NASCAR, hunting, and fishing with Captain Joe Sauve. He was a huge fan of the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Cubs, Escanaba Eskymos, Lewis Flyers and Lakeland Muskies.

Among survivors include his wife of 30 years, Sue of Escanaba; Amy (Shane) Barnes of San Jose, Calif., Dan “Bud” (Tricia Maggart) Roberts of Escanaba and Sara Roberts of Neenah, Wis.: and Christina Roberts of Appleton; sisters, Cathy DeMars and Patti (Steve) Menard of Escanaba and Jean Roberts (Wil Bizeau) of Gladstone. He was also survived by Sue’s family; his mother in law, Betty Rogers of Escanaba; and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Pat (Pat) Rogers of Escanaba and Carrol (Jeff) Erickson of Portage, Mich., Mike Rogers, Tim Rogers, Dan (Carole) Rogers, Jim (Maureen) Rogers and Art Rogers, all of Escanaba; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilfred and Joanne Roberts; father in law, John P. Rogers; and brother in law, Tom DeMars.

Dan touched a lot of lives and will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Visitation will be on Friday, Feb. 1, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. The Delta County Veterans Council will have military rites at 4 p.m. and the Elks memorial service will be at 5 p.m. Visitation will also be on Saturday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph and St. Patrick Church with Rev. Eric Olson officiating. A luncheon will follow in the church hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Dan’s family and they will be establishing a memorial at a later date.
