Ralph Mercell Berger

CARNEY – Ralph Mercell Berger, 89, of Carney passed away suddenly due to heart failure on Jan. 23, 2013, in Apoka, Fla.

Ralph was born in Carney on March 28, 1923. He was the last of six children born to Arthur and Annie Berger. His father was one of the first to homestead in Gourley Township. Ralph attended the Wilson SDA school from grades 5 through 8 and finished his high school education at Hylandale Academy near LaCrosse, Wis., where he met his wife, Leone.

During World War II, Ralph ran the family farm and therefore was not drafted into the military due to his job being considered essential work. Ralph and his brother-in-law, Bob, then started Berger and Robinson Heating and Electrical Contracting.

When Bob moved back to Illinois, Ralph partnered with Don King and formed the company Berger and King Plumbing and Heating, which still operates today. As time went on they purchased another business in Kingsford, where he continued his work in the mechanical contracting field.

Ralph retired in 1989 and has since enjoyed numerous hobbies such as stained glass. He loved spending time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was blessed to spend 24 winters in Florida with his wife, Leone. Ralph was a wonderful man with a Christ like character who was loved by everyone and he will be greatly missed.

Ralph is survived by Leone, to whom he was married for 69 years; his brother, Howard and his wife, Adeline Berger; son, Gary Berger and his wife Beverly; granddaughter, Dana Zinke and her husband Greg and their children Jacob and Makayla; son, Tom Berger and his wife, Rene; grandson Justin Berger and his wife Rachel and their children Hazel, Arcamedies, and Lilliana; granddaughter, Tiffany and her children Topanga and Trinity; daughter-in-law, Chris Roush and her husband Duane; grandson, Todd and his children Nicholas and Nathan; grandson, Chad Berger and his wife Lorrell and their children Christopher and Jordon.

He is preceded in death by his brothers Florian, Clarence, Raymond; and his sister, Mabel Sandal; his son, Timothy Berger; and his grandson, Greg Berger.
