PERKINS – The North Dickinson girls gained a little separation in the second quarter Monday night, handing the Mid Peninsula Wolverines a 60-48 basketball loss.
“That’s when they (Nordics) hit most of their 3s,” said Mid Pen coach Ryan Lyle. “We got caught in a couple slow rotations in our zone and they hit their shots.”
Mid Pen trailed 19-16 after the first quarter and 38-26 at halftime of the Skyline Conference contest.
Miranda Jacobson led the Nordics (3-11 overall, 2-6 league) with 20 points and 17 rebounds. Lexi Steele, who sank a 3-point shot at the halftime buzzer, added 12 points.
“The Jacobson girl is quick and aggressive, and she can jump,” said Lyle. “She’s aggressive going after the ball, which is a tough thing to counter.”
Hunter Branstrom paced Mid Pen (4-11 overall, 2-7 Skyline) with 20 points and 13 boards. Kelsey Shope, who sat six minutes of the second quarter with three fouls, and Marissa Westlund had eight points each. Shope also collected six steals.
“Hunter got double-teamed a lot, but she did well,” said Lyle. “Kelsey’s foul trouble hurt us. She still did a lot of good things, only a couple mistakes hurt her tonight.
“I thought our girls gave a better effort than they did on Saturday (in a 48-38 loss to Munising). But there’s still room for improvement. We decided to open it up a little more tonight. We ran a little more than in the past.”
Mid Pen, which won the jayvee game 46-30, hosts Rapid River Monday.
