Yellow Jackets top Esky

MOUNT PLEASANT – The Regional opener didn’t go how the Escanaba Eskymos would have hoped. They drew the powerhouse Greenville Yellow Jackets in the first round, who would go on to win the whole contest.

“We didn’t wrestle with a lot of energy tonight, and it really comes back to get you,” said Eskymos coach Jamie Segorski. “It’s never easy making the five-hour bus ride while trying to maintain our weight and everything, but we’ve done it before. Things just didn’t fall together this time around.”

Greenville beat Escanaba 53-21 in the opening round. Then Bay City Western beat Gaylord 37-36 in a tiebreaker. The two remaining teams squared off in the final, and the Yellow Jackets dominated Bay City Western 45-19.

“They’re just a good, solid program,” Segorski added.

Escanaba resumes Saturday, when they head to Bay City for the individual regionals.

“Today was the end of a rough season,” he added. “We suffered throughout with injuries, and it was just a tough year as a team. We didn’t have the success that we normally have, but we are still district champions and we made a showing in the regional tournament.”
