Kenneth R. Smith, Jr.

MANISTIQUE – Kenneth “Snuffy” Smith, 82, of Hiawatha Township, Manistique, died Feb. 21, 2013, at the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility in Manistique.

He was born Oct. 23, 1930, in Chicago, Ill. the son of Kenneth and Signe (Swartstrom) Smith and attended Manistique area schools. He was a graduate of Manistique High School.

Snuffy was employed on the Great Lakes steamships for several years. After his retirement from the steamships, he worked on the Boblo Island Ferry in Detroit.

Known as the “Mayor of Ty Hill,” he was a member of the Manistique Elks Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, cutting wood, gardening and collecting.

Ken is survived by his son, Robert (Andrea) Smith of Manistique; daughters, Mary Wood of Manistique, Patti (David) Krzyzanski of Manistique and Peggy (Steve) Creeden of Manistique; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and his special friend, Nancy Sangraw of Manistique.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, David Smith; and his son-in-law, Joe Wood.

Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. A memorial ritual conducted by the officers of the Manistique Elks Lodge 632 will be held at 4 p.m. A luncheon will follow at the Manistique Eagle’s Club.

Burial will be held in the Hiawatha Township Cemetery at Manistique.
