David R. Horie

DEVIL’S CREEK, Mich. – David R. Horie, 77, of Devil’s Creek, Mich., passed away on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility in Powers. David was born on Jan. 4, 1936, in Detroit to the late William and Marjorie (Oliver) Horie. David proudly served his country in the United States Army serving as a chaplain’s assistant in Japan.

On Aug. 15, 1959, David married the former Nancy Bremmer. Nancy preceded him in death on June 2, 2007.

In 1975 David and his family moved to the Devil’s Creek area east of Daggett. David started Eagleland Painters which eventually graduated into Dave the Painter. David volunteered his painting talents to many churches throughout the Mid County. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved trapping, hunting and fishing. David also enjoyed gardening and reading. David was past Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 418. David also enjoyed coaching Little League Baseball in Daggett and playing in the local softball league. David is best known for being Uncle Sam in the Mid County 4th of July and Labor Day parades and the Cedar River Bridge Walk handing out flags with his grandchildren.

David is survived by his children, David Troy (Chris) Horie of Fredericksburg, Va., Traci (Larry) Wall of Daggett; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dick and Paul Horie; and sister, Barb Geyer.

David was preceded in death by his son, Todd Horie; brother, William “Skip” Horie Jr.; and sister, Marjorie Rohr.

Family and friends may call at Anderson Diehm Funeral Home on Saturday, March 2, after 1 p.m. until time of military rites at 2:30 p.m. followed by funeral service.

Burial will be in Stephenson Township Cemetery in the spring.
