Nilo Makosky

CORNELL – Nilo Joe Makosky, 79, of Cornell, passed away Monday, March 4, 2013, at Christian Park Healthcare Center in Escanaba.

He was born in Kingsford on July 24, 1933, the son of the late Robert and Josephine (Muther) Makosky. Nilo was raised in Hyde and attended school there.

He married the love of his life Janith Berrigan on Feb. 8, 1958, at St. Anne’s Church in Escanaba.

Nilo worked in the woods with his father before joining the military. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

He was employed with MA Hanna as a sailor for over 35 years on the iron ore boats. He then went to work mowing for T&S Contracting for 10 years before finally retiring in 2000.

Nilo was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Perkins and a lifelong member of the Amvets Post 123.

He enjoyed the outdoors, gathering and chopping firewood, gardening, fishing and hunting along with his hobbies of woodworking and crafts. Nilo especially enjoyed playing cards (solitaire), picnics, camping, watching sports and westerns on TV and social gatherings with family and friends.

Nilo is survived by his loving wife, Jan; brother, Henry Makosky; and sister, Harriett Hider, both of Escanaba; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Josephine Makosky; brothers, Lawrence and John Makosky; sister, Daisy Makosky; sisters-in-law, Janice “Jen” Makosky and Shirley (Billieann) Makosky; and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Hider.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 7, from noon to 1 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Church in Perkins. The Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Church with Fr. Jacek S. Wtyklo officiating, with a luncheon to follow in the church hall.

Interment will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery in the spring.
