Fire damages dwelling in Escanaba
ESCANABA – The cause of an apartment fire in Escanaba Thursday continues to be investigated, said officials this morning. No one was injured.
Escanaba Public Safety responded to the 4:44 p.m. emergency call of a structure fire at 632 N. 19th St. The building contains three apartments including two which were rented out.
The fire originated in the upstairs apartment where one occupant escaped unharmed, said Capt. Jamie Segorski. No one else was in the building at the time of the blaze.
The upper apartment was heavily damaged by the fire and the downstairs suffered major water and smoke damage. Several roofs on the structure made it difficult to confine the fire while multiple layers of shingles also hampered firefighting efforts, Segorski said.
Firefighters were at the scene for more than three hours. The Delta County Sheriff’s Department assisted Public Safety. Rampart Emergency Medical Services were on standby.
The building is insured and is owned by Kotzen Properties LLC of Indiana.
