Lawrence J. ‘Larry’ Sagataw
WILSON – Lawrence J. “Larry” Sagataw, 69, W368 38 Rd, Wilson, Mich., passed away on Saturday, March 16, 2013, at the VA Hospital in Iron Mountain,
He was born on April 22, 1943, in Cross Village, Mich., the son of Levi and Helen (Petoskey) Sagataw.
Larry served in the Army from 1962 until his honorable discharge in 1966. He served in the Vietnam War receiving the Parachutist Badge, Good Conduct Medal (1st Award), Vietnam Service Medal, Sharp Shooter (M-14 rifle), National Defense SVC Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantry Medal (1st Award).
After the service he lived in Milwaukee for 30 years.
He worked for AO Smith Towers Automotive, retiring in 1997. Following his retirement, Larry moved to Hannahville.
On Nov. 21, 1981, Larry married Karol Little in Milwaukee.
Larry enjoyed helping people, being outdoors, playing bingo, mowing the lawn and snow blowing.
Larry was the commander of the American Legion Post 116, VFW, DAV and AmVets in Escanaba, 40 & 8 in Carney, and was past 11th District Commander of the American Legion.
He was a member of the Hannahville Tribal Council for the past six years.
He was Catholic by faith.
Among survivors include his wife, Karol; children, Cheryl Sagataw, Lisa Little and Ann Saboo (Ernie) Hardwick of Hannahville; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; sisters, Rose (Clarence) Gill and Betty (Dave) Williams of Hannahville; brothers, Joseph, Vaughn, Levi (Karen) and Donald (Paula) Sagataw, all of Hannahville, and Philip (Corina) Sagataw of Boise, Idaho; many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Harvey, Kenneth, Francis Sagataw, Irene Mancilla, Florence Silver and Anita Sagataw; and uncle, Alvin Meshigaud.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 19, at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Bark River from 4 to 8 p.m. (EST). The Hannahville American Legion Post 116 and Delta County Veterans Council will hold joint military services at 6 p.m.
The funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. at the funeral chapel with Rev. Darryl Pepin officiating.
The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Sagataw family with arrangements.
