Players of the year: Jermu, Gussert set bar
MARQUETTE – Forest Park’s Lexi Gussert didn’t just have arguably the greatest season in Upper Peninsula girls basketball history, she had one of the most impressive seasons in state history.
Houghton’s Elisa Jermu was a tenacious defender, and on the offensive end, there weren’t many who could hang with the standout senior.
Wednesday, at the UPSSA All-U.P. Meeting in Marquette, Gussert and Jermu were rewarded for their efforts as they received the UPSSA’s highest honor. Jermu was named the Class A-B-C Player of the Year and Gussert received the Class D Player of the Year.
Jermu was simply the best player on a Houghton team that had an impressive run to the MHSAA state semifinals. The team went 18-2 during the regular season, splitting with Class A Marquette. She averaged 19.7 points per game with 5.4 rebounds and two steals en route to being named the West-Pac co-MVP.
Gussert, on the offensive end, had no equal. She averaged an astounding 32.5 points per game with 11 rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks as she led Forest Park to a state quarterfinal appearance and a 19-1 record during the regular season. She was also named MVP of the Skyline conference was named the Associated Press Class D Player of the Year in the state of Michigan.
