James ‘Shim’ Shampo

CORNELL – James “Shim” Shampo, 71, of Cornell, passed away early Thursday morning, March 28, 2013, at Marquette General Hospital following complications of a heart attack.

Jim was born Oct. 3, 1941, in Escanaba, the son of Francis and Margaret (Creten) Shampo. He was raised in Gladstone and was a 1960 graduate of Holy Name High School. Following graduation, Jim enlisted in the United States Navy where he served from 1961 until his honorable discharge in 1965. During his enlistment, Jim received medals of accommodation which included the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Vietnam). Upon Jim’s return from the Military, he went to work for Fisher Body before accepting a position with the Soo Line Railroad.

On April 8, 1978, Jim was united in marriage to the former Vickie Trudeau and together the couple made their home and raised their family on the Escanaba River, in Cornell.

Jim continued to work for the Soo Line for a total of 21 years. He then went on to work for L.S.I. Railroad, working for 14 years, until his retirement in 2002. Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. In addition, he loved spending time at home with his family and friends. He will be deeply missed.

Jim leaves to survive, his loving wife, Vickie; son, Francis (Jennifer) Shampo of Dallas, Texas; daughters, Heidi (Roger) Boden of Pierson, Mich. and Mia (Bugra) Ertas of Houston, Texas; sister, Patricia Shampo of Gladstone; grandchildren, Cody, Collin, McKenna, Rialey, Savannah and Shaelyn. Also surviving are Jim’s nieces, Jackie and Denise; nephew, Jerry; and several cousins and friends.

Jim’s parents, Francis and Margaret, preceded him in death.

Family will receive friends on Monday, April 1, 2013, from 1 to 3 p.m., at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Military rites will follow visiting hours, at 3 p.m. on Monday, by the Gladstone American Legion August Mattson Post 71.
