For the Record
ESCANABA – Remember When? “Former company kept local area in the chips” published on Tuesday, March 19, reported that the Ely’s Potato Chip Company in Escanaba, owned and operated by the late August Janke II, was opened in the late 1950s.
According to Mike Farrell of Escanaba, his grandfather, Eli Sayen, started the company in 1941. It was located on North 14th Street at the time across the street from Binks. Sayen later sold the company to Farrell’s father, Francis “Fritz” Farrell, in 1948.
“My grandfather started it as a hobby but the neighbors enjoyed the chips so much, he started up the business,” Farrell said.
