Escanaba couple charged with torturing teen

ESCANABA – An Escanaba couple, accused of torturing a 15-year-old boy, has been charged with first-degree child abuse, first-degree criminal sexual conduct, and torture, according to Escanaba Public Safety.

Susan Marie Bardo, 46, the boy’s mother, and her boyfriend, Carl James Pellinen, 47, were each arrested on the three felonies after search warrants were executed at their residence on the 1500 block of North 20th Street on Friday.

Officers were dispatched to the home to do a welfare check on the boy who was found in an upstairs room approximately eight-feet-by-10-feet and lined with tarps, according to a news release from Public Safety.

After police interviewed the boy about his living conditions, he was transferred from Public Safety to OSF St. Francis Hospital for a medical evaluation.

Bardo and Pellinen were each arraigned in Delta County District Court today and officially charged with the three felonies. Both remain lodged in Delta County Jail each in lieu of a $50,000 cash bond.
