County hires new building and zoning administrator
ESCANABA – The Delta County Board of Commissioners approved hiring a new building and zoning administrator for the county. The action took place at Tuesday’s regular county board meeting.
Dan Menacher, of Wallace, was hired to fill the position of current building and zoning administrator Tim Callahan, who will retire June 1.
Menacher was one of four candidates who were recently interviewed during a committee of the whole meeting, but according to Delta County Administrator Nora Viau, was the only candidate who was an Act 54 registered building inspector and plan reviewer – one of the main requirements for the position.
Menacher has 20 years of experience as a Michigan licensed residential builder, 17 years of experience as a licensed contractor in Wisconsin, and 28 years of involvement in the building trade.
A third-generation home builder, he has nearly three years of experience working for the Menominee County Building Code Department, is a certified soil erosion and sedimentation control enforcing agent, a designated county flood plain administrator, and a certified lead safe renovator.
Members of the board expressed their thoughts about the interview process.
“I thought that Dan interviewed very well,” said board vice-chair Mary Harrington. “He came prepared for the interview and he meets all of the qualifications that we requested for applicants to have.”
Harrington noted Menacher currently works part-time for Menominee County and he wanted to make sure he was not putting them in a problematic situation if he was hired by Delta County.
“We have very good relations with Menominee County and that really helps to solidify those relationships. I was impressed by him and he has my support for that position,” she said.
Commissioner Dave RIvard agreed with Harrington, and said he felt Menacher was very energetic about the position.
“He was very enthused about it and, in turn, asked us a lot of questions … about how we worked and operated,” said Rivard. “And living in proximity to where he does now, which is not right in Escanaba, he is very familiar with Delta County as a whole. When you read his resume, he has a very good background, a lot of experience.”
The board voted 4 to 0 to approve hiring Menacher. Commissioner Dave Moyle was absent from the meeting.
In other business the board:
approved a resolution for Emily DeSalvo to fill the position of district court administrator/magistrate.
