Elks to host Spring Convention
ESCANABA – The U.P. District of the Michigan Elks Association will have its Spring Convention at the Escanaba Elks Lodge on Friday and Saturday. State MEA officers will be in attendance including its president, Ronald Zimmerman of Sturgis Elks 1381; first vice president, George Sermon of Tawas Area Elks 2525; and second vice president, Chris Ferguson of Rochester Elks 2225.
Ritual judges from downstate will be judging the initiation ritual contest beginning at 2 p.m. Friday. The lodges competing will be Escanaba, Ishpeming and Negaunee. The 11 O’Clock Toast Contest as well as the Flag Presentation contest will be performed at 5.
The U.P. District is composed of Elk Lodges, including Copper Country 404 (Calumet), Ishpeming 447, Negaunee 1116, Marquette 405, Iron Mountain 700, Escanaba 354, Manistique 632, Newberry 1705 and Sault Ste. Marie 552.
Saturday’s meetings includes the District Deputy Clinic at 10 a.m., conducted by the Grand Lodge Officer, District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler Todd Dunn of Marquette 405. This will be followed by a meeting of the U.P. District conducted by Dave Sladek, District vice president from Copper Country 404, and David Wilson, District vice chairman from Escanaba 354. Frank Berres of Escanaba 405 is the secretary-treasurer of the District.
Reports will be given by the different chairpersons relating the accomplishments of the district in its charitable works with youth, veterans and special needs children and adults. Other reports will reflect on the health of the membership and the lodges.
A noon luncheon for members will be held at the Lodge. A ladies luncheon will be served at the Herford and Hops. The day will conclude with a social hour at 5 p.m. and a 6:30 banquet.
