New director selected for Manistique Orchestra
MANISTIQUE – The Manistique Community Orchestra has been rehearsing for several weeks under the direction of their new conductor, William Rinne.
An Escanaba native, Rinne recently returned to the area and is involved in many musical pursuits, including teaching instrumental lessons, working with school music programs, and performing with local brass and vocal groups.
He studied music at Lawrence and Western Michigan universities, receiving his degree in music education. Rinne has nearly 20 years of experience as a band director, teacher and free-lance musician.
The public is invited to the orchestra’s upcoming concert on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Manistique.
There is no charge for admission, but donations are accepted to help cover expenses. Music will include well-known tunes such as “Simple Gifts,” ” Rondeau” (theme from Masterpiece Theatre), and “Chopstix Variations,” along with arrangements of Italian, Irish and American folk songs.
Manistique High School senior, Mindy Hoholik, will also play a violin solo, “Meditation from Thais” by Massenet. Mindy is a student of Dorene Hatfield and has been participating in the orchestra since it was founded in 2009 by Dorene Hatfield and her husband, Jim, the orchestra’s first director.
The concert is being dedicated to the memory of Jim Hatfield, who passed away in December. It is also given in appreciation of his wife’s continued commitment to and work with the orchestra.
