Anita J. Young
GLADSTONE – Anita J. Young, 89, of Gladstone, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 16, 2013, at the Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba where she currently resided.
Anita was born June 27, 1923, in Escanaba, the daughter of Fredrik and Jeannette (Tappenden) Thorbjornsen. She was raised in Escanaba and was a 1941 graduate of the Escanaba Senior High School. On Nov. 15, 1941, Anita was united in marriage to Stephen Young and together the couple made their home and raised their family in West Gladstone.
Throughout her life, Anita worked primarily as a homemaker, lovingly caring for her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking, canning, baking and going berry picking.
In addition, Anita was proud to have taught many children swimming lessons and was always attentive to the care of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Fondly referred to as “GG,” Anita was proud to make special birthday cakes each year for her grandchildren. She will be deeply missed.
Survivors include her son, Stephen (Mary) Young of Manistique; daughters, Ellen (Peter) Derber of Manistique, Loretta (Larry) Boucher of Escanaba; brother, Raymond Thorbjornsen of Escanaba; sister, Ellen Cain of Indianapolis, Ind.; grandchildren, Joanne (Mark) Flessland, Rebecca (John) Richardson, Matthew Derber, Amy (Jon) Liss, Kimberly (Jason) Cappaert, Jennie (Chris) Miron and Carmen (John) Jamison; great-grandchildren, Tony, Mara, Josie, Sadie, Wyatt, Regan, John III, Jacob Ty, Brooke and Devin; great-great-grandchild, Bailey. Also surviving is Anita’s special friend, Rose Miron of Escanaba, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Anita was preceded in death by her parents, Fredrik and Jeannette; her loving husband, Stephen; brothers, Fredrik, Kenneth and Norman Thorbjornsen; sister, Elizabeth Caddell; granddaughter, Kristina (Derber) Schwartz.
Celebration of life services to honor the life of Anita J. Young will be held on Saturday, May 4, at 11 a.m., at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Escanaba, with Pastor Judy Kincaid officiating. Anita will be laid to rest in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Wells. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Kristina Derber Schwartz Scholarship Fund at Manistique High School, 100 N. Cedar St., Manistique, MI 49854.
