Edith O. Johnston
RAPID RIVER – Edith O. Johnston, 95, of 9277 Co. 503 CC Road, Rapid River, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at the family farm in Ogontz. Edith was born Sept. 29, 1917, in North Escanaba and was the daughter of Oscar and Olivia (Jeppsson) Carlson. Edith graduated from Escanaba High School in 1935 and then attended Cloverland Commercial College in Escanaba.
The former Edith O. Carlson married Richard A. (Dick) Johnston on April 19, 1941 at Central United Methodist Church in Escanaba and he preceded her in death Sept. 28, 1971. Edie and Dick, with their three young sons, moved to the family farm in Ogontz in 1948. Edith helped manage the family farm at Ogontz and a second farm (Camp 5) in Cornell, raising Jersey and Hereford cattle.
In 1956 Edith accepted a job as a secretary to the superintendent of the Rapid River Public Schools, working for 28 years, until her retirement in 1984. She was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church, the Women of the E.L.C.A. (WELCA), and the Friday Ladies Quilting Group at Calvary.
Edith O. Johnston is survived by her sons, Daniel B. Johnston of Ogontz, Wallace E. (Carol) Johnston of Ogontz; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Johnston of Lansing; grandchildren, Richard, Mark, and Janet Johnston, Steve (Mary Fay) Daigneau, Kay Johnston, Andrew Johnston, Bridget (Eric) Cullimore; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Zach, Wyatt, and Georgia Johnston, Kyley Hoier, Reed Cullimore, Landen, Brody and Brayden Daigneau and several nieces and nephews
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death her son, Reed Johnston; sister, Olga Carlson; and brother, Hilding Clarence (Lillian) Carlson.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday, May 6, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Gladstone. Funeral services celebrating the life of Edith O. Johnston will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Stephen Gauger officiating. A luncheon will be served following the funeral services at the Calvary Lutheran Church fellowship hall.
Burial will take place in the Rapid River Cemetery.
