Belly dance classes begin Wednesday at the Bonifas

ESCANABA – If you’ve yearned to be a sleeker you; if you enjoy dancing; if you just want to be healthier; if you’d enjoy being part of a fun-loving, active group of women, belly dancing just might be for you.

“You don’t have to be a certain shape or size or a certain age,” said Jeana Harmon, belly dance instructor at the Bonifas Arts Center. “Our group has women from teens and new moms to grandmothers. These motions are natural for women, and increase strength and tone muscles while you have fun.”

The Goddess Belly Dance Troupe has grown over the years Harmon has taught in Escanaba. It’s now a community of women who perform, design costumes for themselves, choreograph dances to music from modern to Christian to traditional Eastern.

Harmon, who has also taught dance aerobics, has been belly dancing for the last dozen years. She has written an article about her Escanaba troupe which is scheduled for publication in the magazine, “Zaghareet!”

Classes start Wednesday and run each Wednesday through June 19, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Arts Center. Fee for the six-week course is $38, or $30 for Arts Center members.

Classes at the Arts Center are underwritten in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs.
