Harley H. Nelson

MANISTIQUE – Harley H. Nelson, 87, of Delta Avenue, Manistique, Mich., passed away early Saturday morning, May 11, 2013, at the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility.

Harley was born Dec. 28, 1925, in Niagara, Wis., the son of Brady and Lilly (Sjoberg) Nelson. He attended Manistique Public Schools and later, proudly served our country during World War II in the U.S. Navy, serving in the South Pacific.

On May 9, 1953, Harley married the former Lois Foye in Manistique. He worked for many years for Manistique Tool and also worked for the Jewel Tea Company as a driver. Harley further worked as a bartender, gas station attendant and painted houses, always keeping himself busy.

He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Manistique, a lifetime member of the Schoolcraft County V.F.W. Post 4420 of Manistique and the Manistique Elks Lodge 632. Above all, his greatest love was his family.

Harley is survived by his wife, Lois Nelson of Manistique; his five children, Brady L. Nelson of Escanaba, Mich., Kim (Larry) Berger of Cedar Lake, Ind., Dean (Dawn) Nelson of Brooklyn Center, Minn., Kelli (Tom) Smith of Manistique, Mich., and Karla (Bill) Roddy of Wausaukee, Wis.; his 11 grandchildren, Brady R., Linsey and Paul Nelson, Cory Berger, Erin Nelson, Travis, Trent and Todd Smith, and Bill, Bryan and Katelyn Roddy; his seven great-grandchildren, Lillyan, Elaine, Raymond, Natalie, Nicholas, Erick and Logan. He is further survived by his sister; Geraldine Hugo. In addition to his parents, Harley is preceded in death by his stepfather, Henry Larson; sister, Lois Ramsden; and brothers, Gilbert and Wally Nelson and Gerald Larson.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 17, at Lakeview Cemetery in Manistique. The Schoolcraft County Veterans will present military honors.
