Redmen edge Eskymos tennis 5-3

ESCANABA – The Escanaba Eskymos continued their losing skid Monday as they fell to the Marquette Redmen 5-3.

“We had an off day,” said Eskymos coach Jim Hansen. “We looked rusty, and we’re still trying to figure out where guys are going to fit in. We still have a lot of work to do.”

Escanaba lost only one match in the singles matchups, but Marquette swept every match in doubles to earn the team victory. Marquette’s Josh Downs defeated John Brant 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles action, and Matt Collins and Mike Edwards beat Dave Fix and Jake Eastin 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 in No. 1 doubles.

“John Brant is playing well, he’s just running into some stout competition,” Hansen said. “Fix and Eastin are having a good start, and for the most part, we’ve been playing good tennis.”

TJ Myrick claimed a hard-fought victory over Mike Vitala at No. 2 singles, winning 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. No. 3 Mike Shields earned the only other win for Escanaba by dropping Max Darr 6-1, 6-1.

“Shields has been solid all year,” Hansen said.

The Eskymos resume today, hosting Kingsford.
