Kolder named Habitat For Humanity Volunteer of the Year

MANISTIQUE – Habitat for Humanity HiawathaLand hosted its Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast on April 27 where Joe Kolder was named Volunteer of the Year. Kolder serves on Habitat’s Board of Directors and is also the current Chairman of Habitat’s Construction Team. The Construction team examines and evaluates all Habitat projects as well as creates the scope of work for each repair or renovation project.

Kolder is a resident of Curtis and attends the First United Methodist Church in Manistique. He spent his career working as a Mechanical Engineer and has been volunteering with Habitat for many years. Kolder’s dedication and hard work has had a very positive impact with Habitat. He has worked tirelessly to help improve the Blanchard Center, which is the facility that houses Habitat’s office, ReStore, and Volunteer Center.

In January, he attended the Habitat for Humanity of Michigan Green Building Summit where he learned new ideas in green building, Energy Star, and other home improvement and energy conservation concepts. Currently, Kolder is working on drawings for converting Habitat’s previous office building into a single family home that will eventually house a Habitat family.

Volunteers are the cornerstone of Habitat’s mission. They are needed for every part of the operation including fundraising, events, office and building maintenance, meal preparation, various teams such as family selection and construction, etc. Many people believe that volunteering with Habitat means swinging a hammer, but there is so much more that must be done just to get to the point where building and renovating is taking place.

Habitat currently has openings on their Board of Directors and Event Planning Team. Anyone interested in finding out what other volunteer opportunities are available as well is asked to contact the Habitat office at 906-341-7437 or stop by at 401 Deer Street in Manistique. Individuals may also learn more about all upcoming events and projects by visiting Habitat’s website at www.hiawathalandhabitat.com.

Habitat for Humanity HiawathaLand serves Alger, Schoolcraft, Delta, Luce, and West Mackinac counties.
