Prep softball: Emeralds continue impressive run
ISHPEMING – With hitting like this, the Manistique Emeralds softball team will be a formidable opponent for anyone heading into districts next week. The Emeralds dropped 50 runs on the shellshocked Ishpeming Hematites in their final action of the regular season Thursday night, sweeping their doubleheader with 25-4 (6 innings) and 25-9 (5 innings) victories. On Wednesday night, the Emeralds crushed Westwood 24-0.
“We’re really starting to hit the ball well,” said Emeralds manager Jessica Nord. “We scored 24 runs yesterday and 50 runs today. We’re starting to hit the ball well.”
Kelsea Gonyea hit a bases-loaded inside-the-park home run in the opener to boost the Emeralds. Sammy Williams was 3-for-5 with two doubles and a triple, Breiann Richey was 3-for-3 and Lindsay Knuth ripped a 2-run homer.
Breiann Richey pitched for the Emeralds, giving up six hits and striking out two. Haley MacGregor came on in relief.
The Hematites walked eight batters and hit two Emeralds with pitches.
Nord said she was impressed with Ishpeming’s young pitcher, Sinead Korvela.
“She’s a nice freshman pitcher and she hit a home run that she line shotted over the fence to deep centerfield. It was the nicest home run I’ve seen this year and the first one we’ve given up all season. It was Albert Pujols good,” she said. “I was impressed. She deserved everything she got.”
In the nightcap MacGregor picked up the victory, scattering seven hits over four innings and striking out two with one walk. Ashley Menominee came on in relief.
Allie Nagy was 4-for-4 at the plate, Knuth and Gonyea each went 3-for-5, Jamie Erickson went 3-for-3 and Williams was 2-for-3.
The Emeralds (12-7-1) will open district play Tuesday at Gladstone.
