M-PC golf: Knights, Mountaineers shoot for victory

CHAMPION – A pair of Dickinson County golfers not only won medalist honors, but led their teams to victories at the Mid-Peninsula Conference high school golf meet held Thursday at Wawonowin Country Club.

Playing in blustery conditions with a few snow flurries reportedly blowing sideways, Austin Hansen of Norway shot 79 to beat out a pair of Negaunee golfers by four strokes and lead the Knights to the team title.

Norway shot 344 to 352 for the runner-up Miners, who got 83s out of junior David Renaldi and senior Andrew Katona. Those three top golfers plus Norway’s Justin Anderson, who shot 84 Thursday, and teammate Bryce Kelly (86) were named to the All-M-PC boys first team.

In the girls meet, Katelynn Johnson of Iron Mountain was the only competitor to break 100, with 97, to earn medalist honors by 11 strokes over Manistique sophomore Hailey Hoholik (108).

And the Mountaineers recorded a huge 94-stroke victory over the Emeralds in team competition, 435-529.

Johnson, Hoholik, IM’s Maria Pirkola (110), Norway’s Shelby Matonich (111) and the Mountaineers’ Cassie Feira (113) all made the All-M-PC girls first team.

Westwood was third in girls team scoring with 551, followed by Norway with 556 as Negaunee didn’t field a full team.

The All-conference girls second team, with scores shot Thursday, included Westwood freshman Bridget Wood, 123; Negaunee junior Liesl Flannery, 123; Manistique freshman Rachel Ryan, 123; and IM’s Sarah Pirkola, 115, and Marti Pirkola, 123.

For the boys, IM was third with 356, Westwood fourth with 388 and Manistique fifth with 389, Ishpeming sixth with 394 and Gwinn seventh with 413.

The all-conference boys second team consisted of Ishpeming senior Cody Kugler, who shot 86 Thursday, and junior teammate Matt Kilberg, 88; Westwood sophomore Trevor Burke, 90; and IM’s Austin Blomquist and Matt Willman, each with 87.
