Norval George Menge
ROCK – Norval George Menge, 86, of Rock, passed away, surrounded by his family, on Sunday, June 2, 2013, in Rock. He was born April 30, 1927, in Farmington, Mich., and was the son of George and Virginia (Sproote) Menge. At age 14 Norval moved to Waterloo, Mich., to work and live on a farm. He served in the U.S. Army during the World War II era from Nov. 7, 1945, until he was honorably discharged on May 18, 1950, in Germany.
Norval married the former Elisabeth Boehm in 1948 in Germany and she preceded him in death on Sept. 29, 1966. He then married the former Karen Harr in Waterloo, Mich.
Norval was employed as a reinforced ironworker with Local Union 25 for more then 28 years, retiring in 1984. In the fall of 1978 Norval moved to Rock. Norval was a member of the National Rifle Association, Local Union 25 and loved to spend time with his family. He also enjoyed going to auctions, cutting wood, planting trees, gardening and just being in the outdoors. Norval always said, “Your health is your wealth and your wealth is your health.”
Norval George Menge is survived by his sons, George (Patricia) Menge of Dexter, Mich., Justin Menge of Rock; daughter, Dawn Meeker of Rock; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by sons, Norval Raymond Menge and Richard Arthur Menge; daughter, Antje Karen Wolfe; wife, Elisabeth Ida Menge; and grandson, Nathan Menge.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, June 6, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Gladstone. Veterans military rites will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Rock Cemetery with burial to follow in the Rock Cemetery.
