Raymond W. Sundstrom

STONINGTON – Raymond W. Sundstrom, 94, of Stonington, passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2013, at Marquette General Hospital following a brief illness.

Ray was born in Stonington at his grandparent’s house on Jan. 2, 1919, to August and Marie “Mary” (Peterson) Sundstrom. He was raised in Stonington and attended the one-room Stonington South School.

Ray went into the CCC Camps in 1939 and worked in Mormon Creek, Camp Evelyn, Isle Royale, and Camp Bonifas, becoming a radio operator using Morse code. Ray also worked as an electrician before enlisting in the Army in 1942. He served in battles and campaigns in Aberdeen, North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Southern France and Corsica. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 2, 1945.

Ray worked as an electrician for Harnischfeger, but is best known as the “mailman” for the Stonington Peninsula, and was a rural mail carrier for 33 years, 7 months and 3 1/2 days until his retirement in 1984.

Ray enjoyed woodworking, making wine and spending time with his family. Along with Orville Pedersen, he created the Stonington Booster Club, and was an active member, serving as president for several terms. Ray belonged to the Stonington Booster Club, Swedish Club, American Legion Post 301, and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Stonington.

Ray married Elna “Dolly” Ecklund on Dec. 11, 1942, in Escanaba, while home on a five day furlough from the Army. She preceded him in death in 2003.

His only brother, Don, also preceded him in death – five days before his passing. Those boys did everything together!

He is survived by his seven children, daughter, Sandy (Roland) Jacobson of Escanaba; son, John (Emmy) Sundstrom of Stonington; son, Tom Sundstrom of Gladstone; daughter, Marie (Bryan) Leonard of Peoria, Ill.; daughter, Susan (Dan) Young of Gladstone; son, Matt (Shelly) Sundstrom of Rapid River; and son, Mark (Donna) Sundstrom of Stonington. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, with one on the way!

Ray’s family will receive friends on Friday, June 14, from 3 to 5:45 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Sundstrom will follow at 6 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home with L.L.M. Diane Srutowski of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating.
