ANN ARBOR – Mary DePuydt, 97, of Ann Arbor, passed away on June 11, 2013. Born on July 4, 1915, Mary was one of 15 children born to Horace and Elizabeth Gibbs of Perkins. Mary graduated from Rock High School in 1933 and attended the Chicago Institute of Art for one year to study dress design.
She married George DePuydt, originally from Rock, on Dec. 26, 1942, in Temple, Texas. George was stationed at Ft. Hood before he shipped overseas during World War II.
Following the war Mary and George settled in Escanaba where they had six children. In 1959 the family moved to Grand Rapids. After George retired, they returned to Escanaba in 1981 and spent 26 years surrounded by family and friends.
Mary was a devoted Tiger’s fan and she was treated by some of her children to her first and only live game in 2008.
She enjoyed playing cards, reading and spending time with her large extended family. She was a gifted seamstress, cook and baker and her family members benefited greatly from her talents.
Following George DePuydt’s death in 2007, Mary lived for four years with her son Greg and daughter-in-law Carolyn in Greenville. Almost two years ago Mary moved to Ann Arbor to live with her daughter Fran, a sister of the Catholic religious order, the Servants of God’s Love. Sisters Fran, Mary Fallon and Sarah Draper and their adopted daughters, Victoria, Renee and Anna and foster daughter Maria, lovingly cared for her there. Mary was very grateful to everyone who cared for her over the years and to all the sisters of the order for their kind and loving attention to her.
Mary DePuydt is survived by her six children, Dan DePuydt (Linda) of Muscatine, Iowa; Greg DePuydt (Carolyn) of Greenville, Mich.; Rita DePuydt of Ojai, Calif.; Fran DePuydt of Ann Arbor, Mich.; Ray DePuydt of Kettle Falls, Wash.; and Peter DePuydt (Laura) of Lancaster, Pa.; and her eight grandchildren, Christopher DePuydt (Audrey) of Seattle, Wash.; Michael DePuydt (Tracy) of Grand Rapids, Mich.; Brian DePuydt (Carrie) of Bettendorf, Iowa; Father Francesca of Kazakhstan; Patrick DePuydt of Bellingham, Wash.; and Victoria Moss; Renee Thompson, Anna Nalukwago; and foster daughter, Maria Nambi of Ann Arbor.
The funeral Mass will be Friday, June 14 at 10:30 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church in Ann Arbor with Rev. Fr Francesco DePuydt officiating. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:20 at the church. Luncheon will follow in the parish hall. Interment will be at the Garden of Rest Cemetery in Escanaba, at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 15, followed by a get-together at a place to be determined.
