AmVets builds decks for vet widows

GLADSTONE – Patricia Smith of Gladstone, widow of a Navy veteran, was the recent recipient of a newly built handicap ramp, courtesy of AmVets Post 123 of Escanaba. Smith’s late husband, Phillip Smith, served in the Navy in the 1950s.

She also had two brothers who served in the Army. Eugene was a veteran of World War II, and Blaine entered military service in 1947.

“Patricia saw our ad in the Action paper and, as her last resort, called us asking if we would be able to build her a ramp,” said Mark List, AmVets second vice commander. “She had spoken with other people in the community that she thought might be able to help her but to no avail.”

When List called Smith to inform her that AmVets would build her a ramp, he said she broke down in tears because she was so overwhelmed with relief.

“She told us that we have no idea how grateful she is to the AmVets or what this means to her,” List added.
