Ernest Joseph LaCarte

ESCANABA – Ernest Joseph LaCarte, 88, of 1715 2nd Ave. N., Escanaba, passed away Sunday, June 16, 2013, at his home in Escanaba. He was born Feb. 3, 1925, in Cornell, Mich., and was the son of Mose and Viola (Couillard) LaCarte. Ernie grew up in Cornell and worked in the woods. Ernie married the former Arlene C. Besson on May 12, 1945 and she preceded him in death on April 19, 2005. Ernie was employed at Mead Paper Company and later as a mechanic at Escanaba Machine Company and then he worked at Clairmont Transfer Company as a diesel mechanic until his retirement.

Ernie could fix or build anything. He loved snowmobiling, fishing, hunting and spending time at his camp in Riverland where he planted his garden, enjoyed cutting his grass and riding his tractor named “Henry.” Ernie was a member of the Teamsters Local Union 328.

Ernest Joseph LaCarte is survived by: daughter, Mary (Joe) Hebert of Gladstone; son, Robert “Butch” LaCarte of Escanaba; seven grandchildren, Kristine (Hebert) Berhow, Eric Hebert, Lisa Hebert, Scott Hebert, Jason Hebert, Jeffrey LaCarte and Lori LaCarte; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sister, Millie Young of Gladstone; sister-in-laws, Audrey Lamberg of Escanaba and Helen Cousineau of Escanaba; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by brothers, Albert, Edward and Lawrence LaCarte, and sisters Anna Skradski, Mae Delvaux, Lina Bittner and Eva Gabrielson.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, June 20, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of Ernest Joseph LaCarte will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Father Fran DeGroot from St. Anne Catholic Church officiating. Burial will take place in the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. The Anderson Funeral home is assisting the family with the arrangements and online condolences can be sent to the family at
