James P. Brulla

MANISTIQUE – James Paul Brulla, 70, of 7642W Riverview Drive, Manistique, Mich., passed away at home on Monday, June 17, 2013, following a short battle with cancer.

He was born on Oct. 7, 1942, in Calumet, Mich., the middle child of Matthew and Phyllis (Ziehr) Brulla. He graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic School in 1960 and attended Suomi College, graduating in from there in 1962. He then went to Northern Michigan University where he graduated with a degree in business in 1964.

On Aug. 11, 1962, he married the former Janet M. Dudenas in Calumet. They moved to Manistique in 1966 and raised their family there.

Jim was employed with the State of Michigan Treasury Department as an auditor. After living in Lansing, Mich., for a short period of time, he transferred to take a position in Manistique and retired after 37 years.

He enjoyed camping, gardening, supporting his Green Bay Packers, going to camp, playing cards, evening saunas, reading and keeping abreast of current affairs. He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. Through the years he was an active volunteer with the church and school, the St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Manistique Senior Center. Since retirement he and Janet, have spent a great deal of time traveling to see their grandchildren’s events.

Jim is survived by his wife, Janet M. Brulla of Manistique; four daughters, Lisa (Rick) Demers of Manistique, Jill (Bob) Schnurer of Wrightstown, Wis., Lori (Mike) Langendorf of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Mary Kay (Paul) Hinkson of Manistique; son, Mike Brulla of New Milford, Penn.; 14 grandchildren, Josh (Kasey) Demers, Cole Demers, Darby Demers, Kristen (Nathan Vanden Wymelenberg) Schnurer, Stephen Schnurer, Conner Langendorf, Sydney Langendorf, Darren Langendorf, Andrew Mickelson, Riley Sundin, Tyler Hinkson, Brooklyn Brulla, Cheyne Brulla and Miranda Brulla; four great-grandchildren, Libby Demers, Madelyn Schnurer and twins, Lillyan and Evalyn Vanden Wymelenberg; sister, Bonnie (James) Kimball of Ishpeming, Mich.; sister-in-law, Dorothy Brulla of Allovez, Mich.; brother-in-law, Michael (Janet) Dudenas of Eagle Harbor, Mich.; uncle, Paul Brulla of Traverse Bay, Mich.; aunt, Deetz Brulla of Laurium, Mich.; daughter-in-law, Amy Brulla of Great Bend, Penn.; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gary Brulla in 2012; niece, Lynn Hartman and brother-in-law, Dale Joseph Dudenas.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 21, at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. Parish prayers will be said at 7 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 22, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Manistique with Father Glenn Theoret officiating. Burial will follow in the Hiawatha Township Cemetery at Manistique.

Memorials may be made to St Francis de Sales Church or School or to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
