Guy Francis Hurkmans Sr.
ESCANABA – Guy Francis Hurkmans Sr., 79, of 1620 Willow Creek Road, Escanaba, passed away Monday, June 24, 2013, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Oct. 24, 1933, on the family farm in Northland, Mich., and was the son of John and Delia (Dousi) Hurkmans. Guy attended elementary school in Northland and then the Escanaba High School.
Guy began his employment career with Northern Plumbing and Heating and remained there until 1971. In 1970 he was hired by Mead Paper Corporation as a heavy equipment operator, became a foreman, and retired from his position in 1991. Guy then re-entered the workforce as a greeter at Walmart.
On May 29, 1969, Guy married the former Millie Antonson and they recently celebrated 44 years of marriage. In 1979 Guy and Millie moved to Arnold, Mich., and lived there until 1987 when they moved back to Escanaba.
Guy had a great love for his family. He was a wonderful husband, father, and loving papa and was proud of all his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. All children were crazy about Papa Guy. He was an excellent wood craftsman, enjoyed fishing and hunting with his kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, and nephews. He loved camping and sitting around the campfire roasting hotdogs. Guy was a lifelong lover of horses and dogs, and knew how to fix just about anything. He always took great joy in helping others.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, former Elks member, Parish Council, Wells Township School Board, Lakeview Cemetery Board, and former Boy Scout leader.
Guy is survived by: wife, Millie, of Escanaba; children, Cyndy (Jeff), Cathy (Greg), Paula (Jim), April (Darren), Doug (Lori), Bruce (Chris), Ken, Guy Jr. (Tammy); grandchildren, Becca, Stephanie, Heather, Greg Jr., Christopher, Shane, Sara, Scott, Bryan, Kimberly, Ashlee, Nicholle, Kristy, Shaun, Amanda, Breanna, Jeremiah, Johnathon, Katie, Mallory, Benjamin, Marina, Dana, Brett, Vincent, and “special” grandchildren Peter, Charlie, and Daniel; many great-grandchildren; special family, Jessica and Clint McLean.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Delia; mother and father-in-law, Ruth and Walter Antonson; sisters, Maryann, Betty, Ann, and Marge; brothers, Jim, Bill, Nick, and Joe; son, Daniel; daughter, Cathi Jo; and daughter-in-law, Renee.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 26, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Guy Francis Hurkmans Sr. will follow at 4:30 p.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Church with Fathers Rick Courier and Fran DeGroot officiating. A luncheon will take place in the church fellowship hall at the conclusion of the funeral mass. Burial will take place in the Lakeview Cemetery.
