Douglas Kent Williamson

ISHPEMING TOWNSHIP – Douglas Kent Williamson, 59, passed away on Thursday, June 27, 2013, in his home at Cedar Hills Adult Foster Care Home in Ishpeming, Mich. The staff, his family and UP Home Health and Hospice cared for him during his final days.

Douglas was born on March 13, 1954, to George L. and Velma (Mills) Williamson in Delta Co, Michigan. He resided at his parent’s farm in North Delta, Mich., until he moved to Sault Ste Marie, Mich., after his father’s death in 1978.

Douglas attended the Marquette-Alger Intermediate School program and later classes at the Sault Area Special Education division until 1981. Upon finishing his education he joined programs at the Sault Sheltered Workshop and continued practicing skills he had learned and enjoyed socializing.

Later Doug moved to a group home in Manistique where he was closer to his brother, Jerry, and sister, Judy. He enjoyed the outings and dancing at the parties they provided.

In late 2004, Douglas moved to his present group home in Ishpeming Township. He has enjoyed the many activities the Cedar Hills staff and Pathways Drop-In Center staff have provided.

Douglas had a pleasant personality and became well-liked by those he met. He enjoyed music, and often sang along with his Johnny Cash CDs. Westerns were favorite TV programs.

Douglas is survived by his brothers, Gerald (Eileen) Williamson of Sand Bay, Mich., William (Marianne) Williamson of Los Angles, Calif., and Lloyd Williamson of Luther, Okla., and his sisters, Donna McShane of Curtis, Mich., and Judy (John) Korhonen of Palmyra, Va. He also is survived by a niece, Christine Korhonen of Salt Lake City, Utah, a nephew, Daniel (Debra) Korhonen and grand niece, Chloe Korhonen all of Negaunee Township. Additionally, Doug leaves six nephews and two nieces.

He is preceded in death by his parents, George L and Velma (Mills) Williamson; an aunt, Dorothy Williamson; and a nephew, Jeremy McShane.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 1, at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.

Burial will be at Mathias Township Cemetery near Trenary, Mich., at a future date.
