Two injured in crash involving three moose

MARQUETTE – Two Republic men were involved in a traffic accident Friday evening in Republic Township that involved three moose.

According to the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, Neil Nieminsky II, 42, and his passenger, Martin Oakley, 33, were traveling on M-95, five miles south of U.S. Highway 41 when the men spotted two moose standing alongside the roadway.

Police said Nieminsky swerved the 1995 Subaru Legacy to the left to avoid the animals when a third moose entered the roadway in the vehicle’s path.

Nieminsky was unable to avoid striking the third moose head-on, causing minor injuries to both men.

Police responded to the accident at approximately 10:35 p.m., along with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Police said DNR officials dispatched the injured cow moose. Nieminsky and Oakley were transported to Marquette General Hospital by Bell Memorial EMS.
