Gertrude Lucille Kutches

FLAT ROCK – Gertrude Lucille Kutches, 90, formerly of Flat Rock, passed away July 8, 2013, surrounded by her loving family at the Pinecrest Medical Care Facility, where she had resided since 2006. She was born in Cornell on July 13, 1922, to George and Earnestine (Delveaux) Veraghen. She attended Chandlier School in Cornell.

On Dec. 28, 1938, the former Gertrude Lucille Veraghen married Leo King at the St Francis Hospital Chapel in Escanaba. Together they worked on their farm in Flat Rock where they raised six children. On Nov. 28, 1955, Leo suddenly passed away leaving Gert with six children and the farm, she worked very hard to provide for her family. She met Joseph Kutches and on Aug. 6, 1956, they were married at Holy Family Catholic Church in Flat Rock. Together they had four children. Joe preceded her in death on May 25, 1996.

Gert’s most important job in her lifetime was to be a wonderful mother and homemaker. When her youngest child was in school, she began a new career and was employed by the Gladstone School District in the kitchen at the Flat Rock School. She later worked her way up to head cook retiring in June of 1986. Gert was an excellent cook; everyone said if she tried she would be able to make dirt taste good. She was known for her down-home cooking, and on the weekends she would cater for many local events.

She was very much a people person and lived life to the fullest. With her infectious smile and hearty giggle, she made friends with everyone she came in contact with. Gert loved celebrating her birthday. The month of July was affectionately named “Gertie Fest” by her children as it seemed she celebrated her birthday the entire month.

Gert was a lifetime member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Flat Rock. She also was a member of the Holy Family Altar Society, Flat Rock Seniors Citizens, Gladstone Retiree’s Birthday Club, and Michigan Retired School Personal.

She is survived by: eight children, Marion Sodergren of Bark River, Randy (Lori Cossette) King of Flat Rock, Sandy King of Flat Rock, Glenn (Ann) King of Flat Rock, Marcia (Herb) Iverson of Lake Bluff, John Kutches of Carrols Corners, Marlene (Bob) Valley of Soo Hill, and Carolyn (Steve) Perry of Powers; daughter-in-Law, Catherine King of Appleton, Wis.; grandchildren, Brian Sodergren, Lori (Leon) Oneal, Dan King, Ben (Lyssa) King, Raceal (Josh) Tchetter, Jeremiah King, David King, Shelly (Tim) Beauchamp, Tammy (Paul) Marenger, Tommy (Kristy) McEvoy, Stacey (Mike) Stier, Kristi (Matt) King-Flath, Jeffrey (Kristi) King, Jaylene (Pete) Iverson-Bradfield, Earlene (Eric) VanDamme, Nicholas (Dana Filkins) Valley, Joel Valley, Ashley (Morty) Young, Kaylle (Cory) Craig, Joey Kutches, Eric Kutches, Shane Taylor; 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Gilbert VanDrese, Peter ( Barb) Kutches, Rodger (Betty) Tourangeau and Leo Nolde; sisters-in-law, Theresa Veraghen, Mary Kidd, Carol Kutches, and Judde (Matt) Snyder; many nieces, nephews, and friends.
