Theodore R. Mattson Jr.

NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP – Theodore R. Mattson Jr., 73, of 7 Horseshoe Lake Circle, Negaunee passed away Monday, July 15, 2013, at his home.

Theodore was born Oct. 9, 1939, in Ishpeming to Theodore R. and Ann (Lampi) Mattson Sr. Ted graduated from Ishpeming High School, class of 1958. He served his country in the U.S. Navy and following his honorable discharge he attended Northern Michigan University.

Ted worked as an electrician for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company for 32 years, retiring in 1998 from the Empire Mine. Ted had a love for music and was an accomplished accordion player. He enjoyed walking, hunting and in his younger years riding horses. He was an avid pool player, enjoyed leather work and was a pilot. He was a boxer while in the Navy and when he returned he enjoyed teaching boxing to children in Trenary. He was a member of the Ishpeming Elks Lodge 447 and former member of the Trenary Lions Club.

Ted is survived by his wife, Ruth (Britton) Mattson, whom he married on May 27, 1989; children, Mellissa (Mike) Pischel of Perronville, Gregory (Christine) Trowbridge of Trenary, Theodore (Trina) Mattson III of Lewisville, Texas, Marcia Giotto of Negaunee, Tracy (Amy) Schmaltz of Chassell and Laurie McGee of Marquette; grandchildren, Nicole and Lisa Pischel, Samantha and Katelyn Trowbridge, Devin Mattson, Kirk and Ryan Giotto, Cara (Brandon) Sicotte, Samantha (Jason) Elinich, Emily Schmaltz, Dylan, Michael and Caitlin McGee; great-grandchildren, Jaxon, Myles, Jace, Jacob and Tanner, a brother in law, Al Hebert, of Ishpeming, Carolyn Mattson of Trenary, mother of Mellissa, Gregory and Theodore III; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Lois Hebert; and a granddaughter, Marla Pischel.

Ted’s family will greet relatives and friends from 10-11 a.m. on Friday, July 19 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. with Rev. Timothy Ott officiating. Military Honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 380.

Inurnment will take place in the Negaunee Cemetery.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Greg Trowbridge, Ted Mattson III, Tracy Schmaltz, Marvin Webb and junior pallbearer Devin Mattson.

A luncheon will be held at the Al Quaal Recreation Area-Teal Lake Lodge following the service. Memorial considerations may be directed to the Upper Peninsula Diabetes Outreach Network, 2803 US 41 West, Marquette, MI 49855 in memory of Ted.
