Field Stone 5K: Richard is repeat winner

FLAT ROCK – Brittany Richard of Garden became a repeat winner in Saturday’s Field Stone five-kilometer trail run, taking the women’s title in 22 minutes, 51 seconds.

Richard, who’s entering her sophomore year at Wisconsin-Stevens Point, was followed by Jodi Pederson of Warrensburg, Mo. (23:47) and Kaylyn Bernard of Escanaba (24:55).

“I’ve been running a lot on roads lately,” said Richard, who’s also entered in Saturday’s Grand Island Trail Marathon near Munising. “It was exciting to be running on trails again. This brings back bittersweet memories from high school cross country. I also needed to get used to the uneven footing. This is always a great race. They do a nice job putting it on.”

Recent Iron Mountain High School graduate Dan Kulas was men’s champ at 18:12, followed by Escanaba High School juniors Eric Cousineau (18:23) and Gabe Ostrenga (19:43).

Kulas led by approximately five yards near the mile mark, then gradually pulled away.

“I’ve been doing a lot of distance training, and I think that helped me pull away,” said Kulas. “The breeze on the back stretch also helped because it cooled us off. It was a good race. Eric was impressive. I’m expecting good things from him this year. He’s going to be good.”

The race, which drew approximately 60 runners, was run under sunny and breezy conditions with temperatures in the low 60s.
