Edward C. ‘Chuck’ Olsen
ESCANABA – Edward C. “Chuck” Olsen, 86, 1109 S. 17th St., Escanaba, passed away early Tuesday morning, July 23, 2013, at St. Francis Hospital.
He was born in Escanaba on June 16, 1927, the son of Ralph and Mary (Elliot) Olsen. Chuck attended Escanaba High School and graduated in 1945. He was a lifelong Escanaba resident.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 until his honorable discharge in 1946. He served in the Asiatic Pacific area. He received the Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal and Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal.
On Oct. 3, 1953, Edward C. Olsen married the former Edith Harrington in Escanaba.
Chuck owned Edward C. Olsen contracting, retiring in 1989. He designed and patented an automated horse feeder.
He enjoyed traveling, woodcraft, furniture making, hobby farming, hunting and was well known for his pumpkin patch.
He was baptized Catholic.
Chuck was a member of the Silver Spurs Saddle Club, Elks Lodge 354 and the Escanaba Country Club.
Among survivors include his wife, Edith of Escanaba; children, Debra (John) Rees of Malvern, England, Susan (Larry) Gravatt of Escanaba, Dr. Charles “Chip” Olsen of Escanaba, John Olsen (life partner, Michael Flath) of Phoenix, Ariz., and Stephen (fiancee, Jeri Noffsinger) of Gladstone; seven grandchildren, Charles “Chad” and Chris Gravatt, Nicholas, Olivia and Noah Olsen, and Alexander and Konstantin Olsen; and sister, Rosemary McMillan of Escanaba.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert “Bo” Olsen.
Visitation will be held on Friday, Aug. 2, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. The Delta County Veterans Council will have military rites at 4 p.m. The funeral service will follow at 5 p.m. with Rev. Emmett Norden officiating.
The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Olsen family.
