Little League Minor girls roundup: Clare triumphs over Westwood

ESCANABA – The Clare Minor Girls’ (age 9-10) Little League All-Stars made a five-run first inning stand up Monday as they hung on for a 7-5 triumph over Kalamazoo Westwood in the first elimination round of state softball tournament.

Brooklyn Tacco had two hits for Clare, which led 6-0 after two frames. The winners face Negaunee today at noon in a quarterfinal game on the west field at Lemerand Park.

Alexis Lake and Grace McGuire and two hits each for Westwood.

No. 4 Hillman 14,

No. 13 Reed City 0

Bailey Schook tossed a no-hitter as Hillman needed just four innings to dispatch Reed City. She struck out seven, walked one and hit a batter.

Abby Funk collected three hits. Allie Funk and Schook added two apiece.

Cheboygan 6, Taylor 0

Morgan Brandau threw a one-hitter, fanned 13, walked one and hit a batter for Cheboygan. Angie Swiderek had two hits.

No. 7 St. Clair 12, No. 10 Essexville-Hampton 11

In a wild game, Essexville went up 11-8 after scoring six runs in the top of the seventh inning, but St. Clair stormed back with four runs in the bottom of the inning, including Hailey Drugach’s walk-off hit.

Drugach went 4-for-4 with a triple, Delaney Schweighofer hit a key triple and Isabelle Agusta and Anna Allington each had two hits. Raegan Mozal was the winning pitcher and went three quality innings for St. Clair.

Essexville was led by Ashlyn Meyers who had two hits and three RBis, Sierra Anderson and Olivia Todd. Todd and Anderson each hit doubles and had two RBIs apiece.

No. 1 Jackson Northwest 15, No. 16 Lac St. Claire 1

Jackson Northwest pitchers Bailey Cooper and Sierra Weller combined on a no-hitter, striking out 11 as they routed Lac St. Claire in four innings.

Identical 9-year old twins Madison and Morgan Neitzke were each 2-for-2 and each launched a three-run homer. Bailey Cooper went 3-for-4 at the plate.

No. 2 Grandville 17,

No. 15 Centreville 0

Grandville pitchers Sam Slager, Jamie Vandermeer and Brooklyn Verbeek combined on a one-hitter as Grandville routed Centreville.

Alyssa Luke led Grandville at the plate with two hits and three RBIs.
