Alfred Oscar ‘Buck’ Swanson

GARDEN – Alfred Oscar “Buck” Swanson, 84, of 13415 8th Road, Garden (Fayette), Mich., passed away Friday afternoon, Aug. 2, 2013, at his home in Fairbanks Township, surrounded by his loving family.

Buck was born Nov. 21, 1928, in Iron Mountain, Mich., the son of Alfred and Christine (Mathey) Swanson. He attended Fayette Area Schools, graduated from Garden High School and then attended Northern Michigan University in Marquette.

On April 10, 1948, he married the former Eleanor “Bell” LaBelle in the Garden Congregational Church.

Buck was a member of the Fayette Congregational Church.

He loved working with his hands and was self-employed as a finishing carpenter. Buck was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as gardening and playing cards.

He was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it.

Buck is survived by his wife of 65 years, Bell Swanson of Garden; children, Brenda (Steve) Tibbetts of Garden, Rhonda (Ed) Kulis of Flushing, Mich., Alfred William (Zandra) Swanson of Garden and William (Lori) Swanson of Flint, Mich.; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild on the way. He is further survived by his sister, Theodora Bouchard of Manistique and brother, Oliver Swanson of Coeurd’alane, Idaho and nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Buck was preceded in death by his daughter, Robin Ann Swanson, and brothers, Henry and Eugene Swanson.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m., Monday, Aug. 5, at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Garden.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, at the funeral home with Pastor Lon Hider and Pastor Darrell Pizzala officiating. Burial will be held at the New Garden Cemetery, in Garden Township.

Buck’s family wishes to extend a special thank you to his grandchildren, A.J., Shannon and Melissa for the wonderful loving care they gave grandpa and also to Vicky Dalgerd and Anna LaBuette for their special care given Buck during this time.
