John Wayne Maki
GLADSTONE – John Wayne Maki, 62, of 111 Michigan Ave., Gladstone, passed away Saturday afternoon, Aug. 10, 2013, from complications of a heart attack at the Marquette General Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
John was born Aug. 17, 1950, in Escanaba, the son of John William and Emma (Therrian) Maki. He was raised in Gladstone prior to serving his country in the U.S. Army. He was trained at Fort Campbell, Ky., and served overseas before being honorably discharged in 1971 with the National Defense Service Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea). Following his service to his country, John returned to Gladstone where he worked over 37 years at Mead Paper Company, retiring in December of 2011.
John was a member of the All Saints Church in Gladstone and the Gladstone American Legion Post 71. His hobbies included spending time at camp, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed being the “Local Host” for the Little Bay Getaway Vacation Cottage in Gladstone, and helping visitors to explore the city that he loved. John enjoyed going to the casino and treasured spending time with his family, especially his grandsons.
In addition to his wife, the former Carol Grzyb whom he married on July 26, 1991, survivors include: daughter, Candice (Ron) Denoo of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; son, Ryan (Chiraphon) Maki of Mountlake Terrace, Wa.; grandsons, Carson and Preston Denoo of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; sisters, Terry (Calvin) Bovin and Sharon (Bill) Bruner, both of Gladstone; mother-in-law, Vera Grzyb of Powers; brothers-in-law, Ron (Cathy) Grzyb of Bark River, John D. (Mary) Grzyb of Bark River, Joe (Jill) Grzyb of Menominee, Dan (Toni) Grzyb of Bark River; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann (Steve) Nelson of Bark River, Cathy (Henry) Broeders of Bark River and Annette (Steve) Minor of Marinette, Wis.; aunt, Flora Moore of Escanaba; numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Bizeau; brothers, Francis, Peter, Robert and Nick Brown; father-in-law, John G. Grzyb; and brother-in-law, Steve Grzyb.
John’s family will receive friends on Tuesday, Aug. 13, from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Military rites conducted by the Gladstone American Legion Post 71 will be held at 4:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial for John Wayne Maki will follow at 6 p.m. at the All Saints Church in Gladstone with Rev. Fr. Jamie Ziminski officiating. Luncheon will follow in the All Saints Church Parish Hall. Burial will be on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Fernwood Cemetery in Gladstone.
