Eskymos tennis victorious in debut

ESCANABA – A few Escanaba Eskymos collected their first varsity victories and Escanaba held off the Marquette Redettes 5-3 in their season tennis opener Wednesday at Ludington Park and Escanaba High School.

“The team played hard and gained some valuable experience today,” said Eskymos coach Dennis Lueneberg. “It’s still early with much more tennis to be played and even more to learn about the game, but I’m encouraged after watching how they competed and represented themselves on the courts.”

There were some tight matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles as Johanna Snowden and Anna Burch competed through three sets, but the Redettes’ Madalyne Connen and Laura Slavsky prevailed. Emily LaFave fought hard at No. 4 forcing tiebreakers in both of her sets but succumbed 7-6, 7-5 to Taylor Swajanen.

At No. 3 singles however, Kayla VanPortfleit triumphed 6-2, 7-6 over Eliza Annelin.

Esky got the victory thanks to its strong play at doubles. The Eskymos swept the lineup. Olivia Berquist and Shelby Gregoire were strong at No. 1 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Brianna Buhl and Taylor Rovin, while Audrey Wilson and Breanna Dault also played well in a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Amanda Gray and McKenzie Verbeke. At No. 3, Hannah Beversluis and Paige Lancour persevered for a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win over Mallory Grugin and Madison Riebolt and Olvia LaForest and Angie Lamarche rounded things out at No. 4, defeating Brenna Leafers and Aubrey Reynolds-Erspamer 7-6, 7-5.
