Cousineau, Richard win Jaycees 5K
GLADSTONE – Escanaba High School junior Eric Cousineau cruised to victory in the Third Annual Delta County Jaycees five-kilometer run Saturday, covering the 3.1-mile course in 18 minutes, 31 seconds.
He was followed by recent Esky graduate Andrew Stenberg (19:28) and Cody Cousineau, also of Escanaba, (21:34).
“I didn’t want to burn myself out because we have Valley Spur (the Munising Invitational) coming up on Tuesday,” said Eric. “We had good weather today and this is a nice, flat course. This was a good tune-up for Tuesday.”
The race also served as a tune-up for Brittany Richard of Garden, who opens her sophomore cross country season at Wisconsin-Steven Point on Sept. 14.
She was clocked at 21:42. Her mother, Jill Richard of Garden, was runner-up (23:42), with Donna Thackwray of Marquette third (26:32).
“I hadn’t run a 5-K for about 1 1/2 months, so my time wasn’t too bad,” said Brittany. “This race was a good tune-up for cross country and our time trial in Stevens Point on Friday. The breeze felt nice, but it was hot out there.”
The event, which drew 32 runners and walkers, was run under sunny conditions and temperatures in the mid 70s.
