James Daniel Shandonay Sr.
GLADSTONE – James Daniel Shandonay Sr., 88, of Gladstone, passed away peacefully Thursday afternoon, Aug. 29, 2013, at the Bishop Noa Home, in Escanaba.
Jim was born Feb. 9, 1925, in Gladstone, the son of Joseph and Tillie (Freske) Shandonay. He was raised in Gladstone and was a 1943 graduate of the Gladstone High School. Jim was an exceptional athlete who excelled in football, basketball, track and skiing. Following high school, Jim enlisted in the United States Marine Corp., where he served during World War II from 1943 to 1946. Throughout his enlistment, Jim received medals of accommodation which included the Honorable Service Lapel Button, Good Conduct Medal, and the Good Conduct Bar. Upon his honorable discharge, Jim returned to Gladstone.
On Dec. 28, 1946, Jim was united in marriage to the former Sylvia Olson at All Saints Catholic Church in Gladstone and together the couple made their home and raised their family and spent their entire lives together in Gladstone. Over the years, Jim was employed at the Soo Line Railroad where he worked from 1946 until his retirement in 1987. Sylvia preceded him in death in 1991.
Jim was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church and the Gladstone American Legion August Mattson Post 71. In addition, when Jim wasn’t helping someone repair or build something or tinkering in the garage, he appreciated and enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing, gardening, spending time at the hunting camp or in the woods. Over the years he enjoyed the company of his dogs or cat and watching the birds feed in his backyard. He welcomed visits from family and friends and the conversations they provided. His humorous quick wit was enjoyed by everyone he came in contact with. He will be deeply missed.
Survivors include: sons, Jim (Karol) Shandonay of Gladstone, Mich., Dale (Mary) Shandonay of Rapid River, Mich., Mike (Marilyn) Shandonay of Gladstone, Mich.; daughters, Mary Lynn (Ed) Reischl of Appleton, Wis., Janet (Rich) Beauvais of Appleton, Wis. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one niece and one nephew.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Tillie; loving wife, Sylvia; daughter, Barbara; brother, John Shandonay; sister, Marie Caswell.
Jim’s family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Mass of Christian Burial will follow visiting hours, at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at the All Saints Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Jamie Ziminski officiating. Luncheon will follow in the All Saints Church Parish Hall. Jim will be laid to rest on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Fernwood Cemetery in Gladstone. The Skradski Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the Shandonay family with arrangements. A special thank you to the staff at Lakeview Assisted Living, where he had resided since February and to the compassionate nursing staff at the Bishop Noa Home during his final days.
